NIGERIANS-DECIDE: AMOBI OGAH LEADS AS NKIRU ONYEJEOCHA AND OTHERS LOOSE STEAM AHEAD OF THE ISUIKWUATO/UMUNNEOCHI HOUSE OF REPS ELECTION.
By Promise UDEH
Ahead of the February 2023 Federal House of Representatives Election, the Labour Party Candidate for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal constituency, Chief Amobi Godwin Ogah has taken a lead with over 8,000 votes, while incumbent House Member, Mrs Nkiruka Onyejeocha lags behind with a distant 5,000 votes and followed by PDP’s Mrs Loveth Ofoegbu with a paltry 4,000 votes as at 10th January 2023. In the Presidential race, Mr Peter Obi leads with 126,000 votes, the APC Presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu has 88,000, and PDPs Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has 74,000 votes.
The Nigeria-Decide Polls is an independent research think-tank based in the United States of America, with a special interest in democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation. The poll is a survey of peoples preferences, acceptability, and marketability of choices in electoral patterns.
Reacting to the development, a public affairs commentator, Dr Chike Omeire explained that Labour Party’s candidate, Amobi Ogah’s lead is not unconnected with the fact that “Nigerians are tired of old patterned politics, where sit tightism reigns supreme. They need positive changes and this is what the OBIdient movement is bringing to the table”. He added that, “the desire of the incumbent, Mrs Onyejeocha’s inordinate ambition to seek another election for a whooping 20 years is a slap on the faces of the people of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi”.
Dr Ibegbu Iheanacho of the Leadership and Transparency Initiative noted that “Isuikwuato/Umunneochi is a Federal Constituency. It is expected that the seat ought to ordinarily rotate”. He said that “attempt to hijack a system that belongs to two Local Governments is a rape on natural justice and affront on common sense. Therefore, it will be unsurprising that even in the actually elections, Nigerians are wiser and will retire any politician who seek to mortgage their Future for 2 decades”.
No doubt, a party’s performance is generally determined by the ideology of the leadership. In line with party policies, all APC members in the Federal House of Representatives, including the incumbent Mrs Onyejeocha are silent while the Federal Government takes Nigerians on a ride of hunger, insecurity, poverty and external borrowings. A look at the leadership disposition of Peter Obi will show that his success will be determined by a House of Representatives which is populated by Labour Party faithfuls who will help him deliver his agenda for a New Nigeria, and this is what Amobi Ogah represents.
The primary takeaway from the American based Online survey is that, constituents have shown willingness to overthrow sit tightism and restore a new Nigeria not just at the Presidential election, but also at the Federal Legislative House where Laws that will make or mar Nigerians are being formulated.
